EXP

EXP just returned from playing Peru Resh: a tribute to Rozz Williams in lovely Pittsburgh, PA on April 1st, 2004.

The ensemble for this show was Paris, Christian Omar Madrigal Izzo, Doriandra Smith, Justin Bennett & our own Mr. Ford. They were joined by the clarinet trio Threed (Harpo, Alan & Terrence J.B. Keenan, who presented to the aforementioned Ford a clarinet, thanks JB!). It was the first real EXP show in quite some time and hopefully the first of many to come. Watch this space...

Information about this show can be found at http://www.propertyproject.org

The Transparency Project

In 1999, Transparency Media joined with Ace & Duce Records to release the 4 cd
Blorp Esette Collector's Edition. Transparency's founder Michael Sheppard expressed
interest in releasing all of the Ace & Duce catalog on cd including much previously
unissued material. This began as a proposed 17 cd project. Currently some 23 cds are in the works, including new material by Ace & Duce, EXP, the B.T.F.M.E. and others, two previous L.A.F.M.S. releases by Dennis Duck & the Seldom Melodic Ensemble, the previously available only as limited edition cassettes from the Ace & Duce catalog (Grime, S.P.F.M.E., the King Brothers). Here is a rundown of some of these future releases and a slight description.

Ace & Duce in the 40s/Transparency Media

Various Artists / Blorp Esette – Collector’s Edition (L.A.F.M.S. 5/10/11) 4 CDs 0022
Transparency & Ace & Duce Records has released the Los Angeles Free Music Society’s Blorp Esette compilations (volume one – LAFMS 5, originally released on vinyl in 1977, and volume two LAFMS 10/11, originally released on vinyl in 1980) on a deluxe 4 CD set, including Blorp Esette volume two in stereo for the first time & over 2 CDs of previously unreleased material plus extensive notes. Does NOT contain the Residents’ “Whoopy Snort (Snorp?)” or the Child Molesters’ “(I’m the) Hillside Strangler”. Well, you can’t have everything…

Collide Berger / Grime Is God Live Solo (Ace & Duce Tapes 001) 0040
Notorious Northeast Ponytail Bandit Collide Berger, guest vocalist on the Child Molester’s Legendary Brown Album gave the world this original cassette recording in 1979 (which contains original versions of his “You Make Me Sick” & “Snake Eyed Donkey, Fish Eyed Snake”) just prior to a lengthy tour of the California Penal System. At once loud, annoying, hysterical & not for the politically correct. Features guest appearances by M.T. Lubotamy, Chicken Larry, the Collide Berger Blues Band & the High Sierra Free Music Ensemble.

The South Pasadena Free Music Ensemble / Random Selections volume one (Ace & Duce Tapes 002) 0041
The second of the Ace & Duce commission cassette series, 1979. Selections spanning the first few years of the S.P.F.M.E.’s existence, which was started by Ace Farren Ford in the early’70’s. (and now including bonus tracks which widen the span of material showcasing the diversity of sounds and personalities of this unusual ensemble. Includes “The Wretched Animals”, “Thet Birddog” and the tender “Componants 1”.

Various Artists / Edison Record: Comparison To The Living Artist Reveals No Difference - A History Of The King Brothers (Ace & Duce Tapes 004) 2 CDs 0043
In 1983, Ace & Duce released 50 copies of the “Edison Record” cassette which circulated around the close friends of the duo in celebration of (then) 17 years of a highly unlikely musical association (ongoing still, some 37 years now) between Richard Snyder & Ace Farren Ford. Includes early recordings by The Sexy Polish Band, Smegma, The Child Molesters, & many other stages of Free Music’s own Loud Family occasionally known as Nosmo & Nopar King.

Electric Bill / The Trio Sessions (ADS 005) 0045
Finally, an electric bill arrives worth paying. Ace Farren Ford has called him, “The Last American Folk Hero”. Bill made these “trio” recordings utilizing two incredibly cheap cassette recorders to simulate the sound on sound process in 1974 to create a kind of perverted “Sons Of The Pioneers” effect. Perhaps the strangest craftsman of the American Folksong that ever smoked a camel with a roach clip. The great Electric Bill has left us now. Ace & Duce has waited far too long to make this artist’s work available to the toiling masses, we will be proud to correct this oversight with this historic milestone chronicling his earliest efforts.

South Pasadena Free Music Ensemble / Random Selections volume two (ADT 003) 0060
A previously unreleased collection of past recordings of the S.P.F.M.E. from 1977-95 with extensive notes, photos & artwork from the ensembles lengthy tenure. Includes their infamous 12/28/77 performance at L.A.’s original punk venue the Masque where they played “everything we’ve ever played all at the same time!” “hippie noize night…the south pasadena crew had turntables, drums, etc. to make noize with – now you know what happened to those ’69 acid casualties. They’re really avante garde or for those of you who like noize for noize sake or headache for headache sake…”

South Pasadena Free Music Ensemble / Live At Garfield Park (ADS 006) 0061
A quiet little public park in South Pasadena was the first location for S.P.F.M.E.’s sound assaults on Christmas day, 1977. Some variation of the group has performed at that park every december 25th until finally calling it quits at the dawn of the new millenium. This previously unreleased collection excerpts some of the many recordings made there over the years. A fine stocking stuffer for any occasion.

Ace Farren Ford / The Complete Sonatas Op. 1 (2 CDs) 0046
A large sampling of the early works of Ace Farren Ford. From solo tape “experiments” to spoken readings to group improvisations. Features the Highland Park Free Music Ensemble (H.L.P.F.M.E.) & the so-called “Ducktoast” recordings of the late ‘80’s and early ‘90’s, sandwitched together like some sort of Dada travelog. More than you ever wanted to know about L.A.’s most obscure underground cult neer-do-well. All previously unreleased material.

Smegma 4 CD set 0047
Covering their 25 years of noise, from humble beginnings in Pasadena 1973 to their humble present day Portland lineup with vocalist Richard Meltzer. The definitive Smegma collection? Of course not, you need it all, but you definitely need this too.

Ju Suk Reet Meate 2 CD set 0048
The long awaited cd release of the long out-of-print Ju Suk Reet Meate solo lp with much more.

Seldom Melodic Ensemble / Godzilla’s Mystery Abortion (L.A.F.M.S. 2324) 0042
Mr. Foon & Human Hand’s Dennis Duck in the second cassette release for L.A.F.M.S., 1977. Contains the original version of the Doo-Dooette’s “Mojave” and “Radioactive War Bonnet” (which appeared on the Cortical foundation’s Light Bulb “Unboxed” CD). Includes original notes & art with bonus tracks and additional notation.

Mr. Foon / Child’s Play (ADS 008) 0044
Mr. Foon’s great lost album, recorded but never released in 1976. An outtake from this album found it’s way onto the 1977 L.A.F.M.S. compilation Blorp Esette (“Oktaaves”) now included in the CD “Blorp Esette Collector’s Edition (Transparency 22) but somehow the album never saw the light of day. Ace & Duce & Transparency are preparing to deal with this by bringing it to you on cd, complete with it’s originally intended artwork and perhaps even more deluxe packaging.

Various Artists / The Blorp Esette Gazette (ADS 2115)
Carrying on the tradition of the Los Angeles Free Music Society compilations, but including a number of more recent recordings by notable noisers, an update for LAFMS enthusiasts with some surprising new additions. Contributions by Electric Bill, Doo-Dooettes, Extended Organ, Donkey Flybye, Rick Potts, Moris Tepper, Skip Heller, Cockfight, Kraig Grady, Judy Henske, Leather Hyman, Larry Easter, Smegma, Tom Recchion, Major Honage, Lions & Lambs, \\\ and many more.

Hurt’N Bros. / Colt Darks, Wolf Broz & Silver Satin – the bootleg collection (ADS 007)
This all-american modern blues combo toured the Hollywood circuit from 1982-1992 yet somehow never managed to release any recordings. Led by John Paul Bormann & Alcool Mike Russell, this release consists of early low-fi demos and home recordings. Two of these recordings were featured on the 4 CD Blorp Esette package.

Dennis Duck / DENNIS DUCK GOES DISCO (LAFMS)
The classic 1977 L.A.F.M.S. cassette debut solo by the multi-talented Mr. Duck that changed the sound of music forever.

Fredrik Nilsen / Music From Norway (Solid Eye)
Fredrik's debut solo cassette finally on cd.

EXP / Deface The Music
The so-called Gothic/Noise ensemble founded by former Shadow Project member Paris, with Ignacio Segovia, Ryan Wildestar, Doriandra Smith, Justin Bennett, Christian Izzo, Ace Farren Ford & the late Rozz Williams.

Doriandra Smith / PICA

Dark dismal & beautiful noises by the dark dismal & beautiful Ms. Smith in this debut solo cd. Beautifully packaged work by the fairer voice of EXP.

Ace & Duce / Several Years Later
a new album by the reformed Ace & Duce group, who performed last November at David Cotner's Turnament, their first show since 1976. Richard Snyder, Dennis Duck, the Professor, Patrick Lubow & Ace Farren Ford with several guests to commemorate the event.
